How Long Do Hard Drives Really Last?

Picture2-022014
One-hundred percent of all hard drives will eventually fail. This is a fact. Some will fail prematurely due to manufacturers’ defects while others will fail because a mechanical part finally wears out. The question is, how long until that happens?  Online backup provider Backblaze.com has kept 25,000 consumer-grade hard drives constantly running for the last four years, diligently noting whenever a hard drive breaks down. The results are very interesting. ¨Ninety-two percent of all hard drives will survive the first 18 months. These failures are typically due to manufacturers’ defects (oftentimes called the “lemon effect”). Hard drives’ warranties are typically one to three years, wh... Last modified on Continue reading

From the Desk of MJ Shoer

MJ Shoer
The front page article in this months newsletter asks the scary question, do you know what to do if an employee’s smartphone is stolen.  It really is a very scary question and the implications are quite broad. Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to spend two days in Washington, DC talking with lawmakers and their staff’s about this and other data security and data breach issues. While I’ll be th... Last modified on Continue reading

You see the same physiological responses – pupil dilation, sweaty palms and increased heart rate. 4.Philadelphia International Airport finished as the No. 1 best airport ... Be A Great Client To Get The Most Out Of Your Vendor Relationships

There is a lot of truth in the cliché “You’ll attract more bees with honey than vinegar.” This is especially true when working with professional consultants. Quite often, business owners take an adversarial approach to working with their vendors. Since they are paying the bills, they believe they have the right to be demanding, difficult and even hostile. What they don’t realize is that vendor relationships can make or break a company, and maintaining a good working partnership with all of your vendors (especially your computer consultant J) is critical to your business success. The more respect and appreciation you give your vendor, the more they will want to do a great job for you. K... Last modified on Continue reading
