Jenaly President, MJ Shoer, Testifies Before Congress About IT Security

Testifies Before House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee

MJ Testifying

Complete hearing video is at the conclusion of this press release.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire — May 19, 2009 — Jenaly Technology Group announced today that MJ Shoer, president of the company, testified before The House Subcommittee on Management, Organization, and Procurement, Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on the subject of "The State of Federal Information Security" this morning.  The hearing was called to examine issues relating to the current state of information security throughout the federal government as it relates to current legislative consideration of modifications to the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) as well as proposed extensions of IT security regulations into the private sector.

Mr. Shoer testified on behalf of The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), of which he is a former member of the Board of Directors.  Mr. Shoer classified his testimony to the Subcommittee as representing CompTIA and its many small business members and by extension, the millions of small businesses that are their clients.

Testifying alongside Mr. Shoer was Mr. Vivek Kundra, the newly appointed Federal Chief Information Officer, the CIO’s of the US Department of Transportation and US Department of Homeland Security and information security experts from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and Hewlett-Packard Company.

In keeping with House rules, Mr. Shoer delivered a five minute oral testimony to the Subcommittee, followed by a question and answer period.  A more detailed written testimony was previously submitted to the Subcommittee.  The Subcommittee leadership is comprised of Chairwoman Diane Watson, D-CA and Ranking Member Brian Bilbray, R-CA and includes New Hampshire Congressman Paul Hodes, D-NH, as one of its members.

Mr. Shoer was able to communicate his concern that current and proposed legislation do not adequately address the issue of verifiable training for those workers who come in contact with sensitive data.  In addition, Mr. Shoer was able to reinforce concerns that whatever legislative action may be taken, that it set achievable goals, based on industry standards, thereby enabling the Federal government to lead by example.  As several States, including neighboring Massachusetts, are enacting their own information security legislation, Mr. Shoer reinforced concern that the business community not be unfairly burdened with having to comply with what could become 51 different standards, which could severely limit economic growth at time when we are working to stimulate it as effectively as possible.
